Top Ten Tunes April 2012

April has seen a lot of big releases from artists who have played with us across India. Local-boy East Stepper pushes the envelope with an incredible debut release on his DeepMisfit label; Alix Perez, guest of the recent Outlook Festival Launch Party, is putting out a beautiful remix; Gumnaam, who toured India with us last year, is bringing out a very tasty new tune; and our very own Delhi Sultanate’s Word Sound Power project drops some serious food for thought. As always, there are a bunch of free downloads nestled into the chart, so don’t miss out on those!

1. Gumnaam – Moksie Dub (Riddim & Culture Records)
BASSFoundation fam Gumnaam kills its with the old school breakbeat styles in this latest release on his own imprint, Riddim&Culture Recordings. He made himself a lot of Indian fans during his November 2011 Indian tour, and this new release is bound to cement that reputation! Buy it HERE

2. Word, Sound & Power – Badang (Free Download)
This latest tune from Delhi Sultanate and producer Chris McGuinness’ Word Sound Power project is heavy hitting and thought provoking stuff. News clips and a soundbite from Orissa’s CM introduce the themes of violent struggles which plague such large swathes of India, picked up on in Delhi Sultanate’s fiery lyrics, whilst samples from Bhanwre Ne Khilaya Phool (out of the 1982 Raj Kapoor film Prem Rog) add to the tune’s menacing and tense atmosphere. Stay tuned for WSP’s forthcoming Blood Earth project, dropping in July. This is music you really can’t ignore.

3. Benga – I Will Never Change (Sony)
Strictly speaking this tune should’ve been in the last chart, but the video came out this month and is so ill that we had to include it! The track – from one of the undisputed kings of dubstep – is a pretty tasty one too.

4. East Stepper – Radio Bass (DeepMisfit Records)
To say this release breaks new ground in the Indian bass music scene is no exaggeration. East Stepper, aka Abhishek Jha, has put out this amazing EP as the debut release on his label, DeepMisfit Records. The title track delivers a bouncy but deep roller, with some wicked desi and old school samples which manage to succeed in the very difficult task of staying the right side of cheesy! All other tunes on this release are fire, so put your hand in your pocket and get the best $4 of music released in India for a long time!!

5. Hybris – Ender (Dispatch Recordings)
Latest release from the unstoppable and insanely prolific Dispatch Recordings comes courtesy of the Czech Republic’s finest, Hybris. This record is yet another which cements Dispatch’s reputation as a ‘buy on sight’ label. Those of you lucky enough to catch boss Ant TC1 on his recent tour of India might have heard this incredibly deep roller in one of his sets. If so, you’ll know it’s a must for your record box!! Out on 30 April, buy it HERE!

6. Submotion Orchestra (Alix Perez remix)
Alix made a big impression on India when he thundered through for a trio of Outlook Festival launch parties in March. This upcoming release takes things on a deep liquid tip for a remix for the incredible Submotion Orchestra. For some words from the producer, check the video that KRUNK made when he was in India HERE.

7. Gorgon Sound – Find Jah Way (Peng Sound Records)
Deep dub sounds from brand new, strictly vinyl, label Peng Sound – an imprint born out of the wicked roots/dub night in Bristol. Make sure you check this interview with the people behind the label and the night. This first release is bound to test your subwoofers, with incredible production from Gorgon Sound (Khan & Neek) and a Dubkasm version on the flip. Both tunes are killer!

8. Enei – One Chance VIP (FREE DOWNLOAD)

Sign up for the newsletter of one of the best D&B records labels around – Critical Music – and you’ll get this amazing track for absolutely nothing! Not a bad deal, particularly given the tune you get is this techy little beauty from one of Russia’s finest producers. Click HERE for the newsletter and free download.

9. Alison Hinds – Roll It Gal (IllBilly HiTech remix) (Free Download)
Wicked, bouncy breaks remix of the Alison Hinds classic – great summer vibes! Many in India will fondly remember Berlin’s iLLBiLLY HiTECH from the India tour in November 2011. Also, this vocal is recognisable to a lot of the BASSF massive from the awesome REDS remix.

10. S.P.Y. – Love Hate (Hospital Records)
Brazillian D&B don S.P.Y. takes things on a heavier tip to his usual style with this surefire dancefloor killer. This is the title tune of his forthcoming EP on Hospital Records, perhaps signalling a return to form for a once untouchable label that many have felt has somewhat lost its way.

Bonus Freebie: Vini Selecta – Champion Dub Sound (Free Download)
French producer Vini Selecta is feeling in a generous mood with this free download of a very tidy dubstep number. Infused with reggae styles and vocals from dancehall legend Buju Banton’s ‘Walk Like a Champion’.

Knowledge Magazine Interview and Exclusive New Mix

Knowledge Magazine – the legendary drum & bass magazine which has been an important part of the scene since 1994 – has just done an interview with us to coincide with our third anniversary. Liv Stroud quized us on a big range of topics, covering how we got started and what the scene is like in Delhi, to some of our ‘desert island discs’ and a couple of funny stories!

We’ve also done an exclusive, brand new mix – available as a free download! Things have been kept on a reggae tip throughout for this one, with some massive new dubplates and exclusive riddims. The mix debuts the huge REDS remix of the classic Stalag Riddim, built for a number of BASSFoundation dubplates, including reggae legends Cocoa Tea, Half Pint and Jah Screechy! One of D&B’s top vocalists, David Boomah, has two wicked dubplates on the mix too. Also keep your ears peeled for two currently unreleased Delhi Sultanate tracks. Other artists featured on the mix include: Dub Phizix, Alix Perez (who killed it at our recent Outlook Festival Launch Party!), Marcus Visionary, Calibre and Bladerunner.

Top Ten Tunes January 2012

Our first top ten of 2012 is as heavy as ever, and this time it’s been the biggest struggle yet to limit it to just ten (in fact, we might have had to add a cheeky extra one!) As before we’ve kept things diverse, and although the list has a backbone of drum & bass, you’ll also find some big dubstep, grime, dub and even breakbeat tracks. We’ve got four very generous artists in the list – giving away high quality files for free. Make sure you support their other work by forking out a few rupees/dollars/pounds/etc. for their other releases, and all the other great music reviewed for you here. There are a few nice videos in the list as well – don’t sleep on them! So have a listen and comment at the bottom to let us know what you think we’ve got right, what you think we’ve got wrong, and what you think we’ve left out!

1. Die & Break – Peace & Dub feat MC Fats and Buggsy (Digital Soundboy)
Two A-list DnB producers and a pair of wicked vocalists collaborate on this incredibly deep, dubbed-out track. The hype so far suggests this is already set to be an anthem of 2012! Released alongside three other huge tunes on the Grand Funk Hustle EP any time soon…

2. Red Eyes – Nightlight (Free Download)
Switching up the DnB styles completely on this lush liquid roller from French producer Red Eyes. Simple production, a beautiful little piano hook and a tasty bit of reverb is all this tune needs to make it what it is! Download it for free Read more…

Nostalgia Mix series by DJ Noble (NL)

This first (and quite belated!) post of 2012 is an introduction to the hours and hours of quality music which form the Nostalgia Mixes by DJ Noble (Rotterdam, Holland). This epic undertaking of eleven mixes constitutes something of a history lesson in DnB, with each vinyl-only set covering a different style, label or artist (including Goodlooking Records, Photek, and atmospheric flavours). For those less familiar with the earlier days of the genre these mixes don’t just give a great introduction to the foundations, but they also highlight where the styles which remain influential today have come from.

DJ Noble has been on the Dutch scene for well over a decade, getting his break back in 2000 and since then organizing nights together with Denny D at Rotterdam’s notorious Waterfront venue. Over the years Noble has played alongside many of the biggest names in the game: Bad Company, Dom & Roland, Ed Rush, Zinc, Grooverider, Krust & DJ Die; and Dutch DnB heroes such as Lenzman, Noisia, Silvahfonk, Denny D, Harsh & Pamb, to name a few. From 2008 to 2011 Noble hosted a bi-weekly show, the Blue Room Sessions, at the well-respected Jungletrain.net internet radio station, where he repped classic drum & bass, as well as the up-front and up-to-the-minute sounds.

Crank up your stereo, enjoy the mixes and keep your eyes and ears open for more Nostalgia businezz coming this year!

Kush Arora Interview and Exclusive Live Recording

San Francisco’s Kush Arora joining our night in November of last year marked two important landmarks for BASSFoundation: it was the first night at Zook – the venue which subsequently became an important home for us – and it was also our first guest artist who could not be described as either drum & bass or dubstep. Kush brought it raw that night – hammering the packed-out venue with a relentless mix of styles which had mainly not been heard in India before (including the slightly mysterious ‘Dread Bass’ which he is partly responsible for creating… find out more in the interview below). We’re very happy to be able to offer this live set for download (see SoundCloud player below) – the first time it has been aired since the recording over one year ago!

To say that Kush Arora is a busy man is an understatement: not only does he hold down a full-time job in the industry at a music distribution company, but he also has an incredible productivity rate in the studio. With this in mind, and a production career spanning over a decade, it would be impossible to list all his releases here. An essential listen for the uninitiated would be his 2009 album ‘The Dread Bass Chronicles’ – an unbelievably fresh-sounding take on dancehall peppered with Punjabi sounds, rugged tribal beats, six guest vocalists and zero regard for dance music conventions. The album was followed up earlier this year with ‘The Dread Bass Chronicals – Remixed!’ – an even rowdier affair than the first installment, with different producers remixing every single track. A handful of other recent projects by Kush have included remixing a new track by the infamous Elephant Man, an infectiously fun UK funky remix featuring London dancehall queen Lady Chann (who featured in the recent BASSFoundation dubplate mix), and a rugged riddim on the ground-breaking Sub Continental Bass album, released by High Chai recordings earlier this year.

We decided that we’d been sitting on this wicked live mix for way too long, and so alongside giving this bad boy away as a free download we also tracked Kush down and picked his brains about his music, his kit, and his opinion on a number of controversial topics in the world of electronic music. As you’ll see below, the man decided not to mince his words!

BASSFoundation: Can you break down for the uninitiated what is ‘dread bass’?
Kush Arora: Dread bass is basically where all shades of reggae-influenced bass music meet up and cross paths, no matter what the era or the cultural backing of the music. Originally, this term was used in some classic junglist tunes, so by no means did I coin it. It came back around when I was producing a version for Juakali’s ‘Two Finga’ record back in 2006 alongside Alpha & Omega and Drop The Lime, and Juakali was doing Dub War in NYC. He was using the term to describe his sound of reggae-influenced dubstep and future bass styles. It really fit the style of incorporating reggae and dancehall vocalists (who were not necessarily Jamaican) on new and upcoming hybrids and riddims. Then I released ‘The Dread Bass Chronicles’ which took many upcoming electronic hybrid styles and used the foundation of dancehall MCing on all the tunes. So the name stuck and it always will be part of what I do forever.

BASSFoundation Dub Special II

Having paved the way with a hugely successful and pioneering ‘Dub Special’ night back in July, BASSFoundation are returning with a second helping and an even stronger line-up! Once again, we’ll be paying tribute to the originators of dub reggae music – the ground-breaking genre that essentially invented the remix and developed many of the effects and styles which are ubiquitous in electronic music to this day.

These innovations – as well as the original sounds of dub music – still underpin most dance music genres, and we’ll be exploring some of these sounds at this night. Get ready for plenty of deep dubstep, a large helping sub-heavy jungle and a good dose of the authentic dub reggae itself!

The line-up for this night features established Dutch dubstep and jungle producer ‘Gumnaam’, local up-and-comer ‘Skeptic’ and BASSFoundation’s own Big Daddy Klein.

BASSWEIGHT film screening at 9 PM

As with the first Dub Special, we will be screening a film early on in the evening…. this time ‘BASSWEIGHT’ – an extraordinary documentary which provides an unparalleled insight into the subterranean world of dubstep. What more, we will be giving away free popcorn during the film as well as offering a specially-devised Jamaican food and drinks menu.

For the early-birds, the night will also feature a free give-away of BASSFoundation’s recent EP release – a collaboration with Gumnaam featuring four top reggae vocalists.

GUMNAAM
Originally from Holland but now based out of South London, Gumnaam is riding high in a new wave of dubstep, DnB and bass-heavy producers. He’s been putting out vinyl releases on his own Riddim & Culture label – always staying true to his unique dub/desi sound. With a major buzz round all his productions and performances to date, Gumnaam has had tracks regularly featured on BBC Radio1 and all his EPs have topped the legendary Blackmarket Records charts. ‘Blow My Mind’ was featured as the opening track on the Ministry of Sound’s ‘Adventures in Dubstep & Beyond 2’ compilation, and DJs across the world have been including his tracks in their sets and mixes. This date is the final gig of Gumnaam’s debut Indian tour.

SKEPTIK
Skeptik’s journey in electronic music started at the beginning of 2009 when he was first introduced to the deeper, dubbier side of dubstep. Inspired by the physical intensity and emotional depth of artists like Digital Mystikz, Kryptic Minds, Burial and Pinch, he decided to try his hand at production. As he got deeper into the sound and culture of dubstep he developed a love for the sound system aesthetic of both dub and dubstep, which led him to start DJing. Although new on the scene, Skeptik’s sets in an around Delhi so far have been big successes, reflecting his fantastic ear for the more experimental side of bass music.

BIG DADDY KLEIN
Big Daddy Klein will be representing for the BASSFoundation crew. This will be Big Daddy Klein’s last gig during his short visit to India. Bringing a record box bursting at the seams with the freshest dub, dubstep and DnB vinyl, he will be keeping it ruff and tuff on this final gig of his brief return to the sub-continent. Expect to hear some bass-heavy styles all-too-rarely repped in India!

BASSFoundation & Indian Music Week featuring Vachan Chinnappa, East Stepper & Empire (UK, Space Cadets)

After repping the full spectrum of reggae-influenced sounds at our Outernational Dub Stars night on 28 October, we are now returning to the drum & bass backbone of BASSFoundation! Friday 18 Novemeber we are joining forces with Rock Street Journal and India Music Week at ZOOK, we’re bringing a huge line-up of great DJs once again. Not only will this night see the return of our very own Big Daddy Klein after a nine month absence, but also joining him is one of India’s first and most highly respected pioneers of the DnB scene – Vachan Chinnappa. Support will be from Delhi’s own East Stepper – a producer and DJ who has grown amazingly as an artist over the last year, and Empire – an experienced London-based DnB DJ and boss of the Space Cadets record label.

Vachan Chinnappa

It’s hard to know where to start with this veteran DJ, but to say ‘Vachan Chinnappa’ is a major pioneer of the DnB sound in Bangalore, and India more generally, is no exaggeration. Over the years he has made a major mark on the underground electronic music scene, and running his own stage at last year’s Sunburn Festival was a testament to this. Vachan’s only previous slot with us was back in March 2010, and anyone who was in attendance at the amazing night will agree that his return is long overdue!

East Stepper

East Stepper – aka Abhishek Jha of The Massive – has been making some of the most innovative DnB to come out of India in the past year. As well as some wicked releases and a string of bookings, he has caught the eye of international radio DJ’s, with interviews and plays on BBC Radio1 and the Asian Network. Expect to hear plenty of East Stepper’s own productions during this set!

Empire (UK,Space Cadets)

Ian Kane (aka Empire), alongside Ario Farahani, is the brains behind the newly-formed vinyl record label Space Cadets. As experienced and imaginative DnB DJ, you can expect to hear some truly original sounds during this set… his only date on a brief visit to India.

Big Daddy Klein & Delhi Sultanate

Two-thirds of the full BASSFoundation crew will be joining forces for the first time in many months. Bringing a record box bursting at the seams with the freshest DnB and dubstep vinyl, Big Daddy Klein will be bringing it raw at this first gig of his brief return to the sub-continent. Expect some of the styles repped on his brand ‘new BASSFoundation mix – The Low Down’ with Praxis, as well as plenty more exciting flavours!
